Wheelchair Motocross Star Makes X Games History With Successful MegaRamp Jump
August 31, 2012
20-year-old Aaron “Wheelz” Fotheringham made history yesterday when he landed his wheelchair jump clearing 15meters on the Mega Ramp at the 2012 X Games in Rio. It was the first time a competitor had ever successfully landed the jump, marking an extraordinary day in Fotheringham’s career.
He said of the experience, “The MegaRamp and I don’t have the best history. We’ve had a lot of on and off-type situations … I came out scared to death. I just had to make sure my chair was going straight, and once it was going straight I was like, ‘Yeah!'”
Fotheringham, who is a native of Las Vegas, was born with Spina Bifida which resulted in the inability to use his legs. He began riding his wheelchair at skate parks when he was eight years old and has since gone on to enjoy a career in wheelchair motocross and stunt competitions.
