This week marks the 32nd Annual National Veterans Wheelchair Games, held once again in Richmond, Virginia where it first began in 1981. The event will host more than 600 athletes from the United States, Puerto Rico and Great Britain, all of whom are military veterans in wheelchairs.
The Wheelchair Games is the largest annual wheelchair sports event in the world and will this year include 17 events ranging from air guns and archery to soccer and weightlifting. The Games will be held at three venues: the Greater Richmond Convention Center, the Sports Backers Stadium and the Greater Richmond Aquatic Partnership. In addition to the sporting events, there will be a Disabled Sports, Recreation and Fitness Expo held on Monday, June 25th and also a Kids Day at the Games held on Wednesday, June 27th.
The Wheelchair Games is co-sponsored by the Department of Veterans Affairs and Paralyzed Veterans of America and was founded with the mission of improving the quality of life for veterans with disabilities by fostering better health through competition.
